Xi'an Jiaotong University, located in Xi'an, one of the world-famous ancient capitals, is a national key public university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China. It is also among the first group of universities to benefit from Project 211 and Project 985. As a comprehensive research university, Xi'an Jiaotong University established the Graduate School in 1984 and its graduate education has been enjoying a great academic reputation at home and abroad. At present, the university has on its faculty 21 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, among whom 11 are members of both academies. Of the faculty and staff of more than 5,000, over 2,200 are full-time teachers, including over 1,500 professors and associate professors. There are more than 18,000 graduate students. The university boasts such specialties as "Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics", "Science and Engineering of Management" and "Business Administration" that rank first among graduate programs at home and "Electrical Engineering" and "Mechanical Engineering" that are among the best graduate programs.
In the past few years, Xi'an Jiaotong University has been making an annual enrollment of over 880 full-time doctoral candidates and over 3,600 master's degree candidates (over 2,300 academic degree candidates and over 1,300 professional degree candidates) from excellent university graduates at home. In addition, the university enrolls about 40 international students as doctoral and master's degree candidates. Graduate programs cover disciplines and specialties of science, engineering, medicine, economics, and management. The period of study for a master's degree and a doctor's degree is usually 2-3 years and 4-6 years, respectively.
